The owners of a Missouri restaurant are pleading with people online to stop harassing their employees after a customer posted a photo of their receipt that showed she was charged a “Covid 19 surcharge” for a meal.

The customer posted the photo of the receipt from Kiko Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Lounge in West Plains on May 11, writing: “Scuse me … what? A covid surcharge…?”

The tweet went viral, and Twitter users began hurling insults at the staff of the restaurant for the surcharge, the steakhouse wrote in a Facebook post.

They wrote that the surcharge was applied because of an increase in the price of meat and poultry because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Please understand we are not doing this to take advantage of you guys!” the restaurant wrote in the Facebook post.

“We are doing this hoping we can adjust the surcharge weekly rather than just raise all of our prices on our menu due to increase prices from our supplier on meat, poultry, seafood & produce,” they added.

Meat prices in the US have shot up in recent weeks, increasing more than 8 percent in April.

In response to the backlash, the restaurant said it would take the surcharge off and instead raise their prices across the board. However, it added that it would be offering a “good promo deal” so customers can “enjoy our meal with a low cost.”

Well, obviously for a lot of businesses there are going to be increased costs/decreased revenue that needs to be made up somewhere or else they can't stay open but labeling it "COVID surcharge" seems pretty dumb. Probably a better way to do it than that.

Makes sense if they make people aware of before dining, have signs and post on social media . Beef has skyrocketed

I think this will happen a lot. I remember the gas surcharges back in the late 2000's.

Would be better for these restaurants to bury increased prices into their prices rather than hit people with the surcharge. Less questionable that way.

Ate bbq yesterday and they had a sign up saying they had to increase their prices due to the increased price of meat. Ended up paying $2 more than I would have last month for the meal. They're a small local restaurant so didn't see a reason to complain.

It wouldn't be a big deal to me. If I didn't like the charge I would just dine at another resturant.

but you wouldn't know until you've finished your meal and got the check

like my borough garbage collectors just set new rules that they will only take garbage that is bagged and inside a garbage can. So if you bought a TV they will not take the cardboard box if it's leaned up again the can like they've always done nor will they take any large items you're tossing from Spring cleaning.

the reason given for the new rules is "covid-19"

Its no big deal to me however, the restaurant should have a note somewhere that they are incurring a 5% fee.

I dont think many patrons would mind (i hate when getting my check after my meal seeing "extra charges" where i am being nickled an dimed". However i have no problems having the server tell me that there is an upcharge)

but the reasoning is that they don't want to just increase the price of specific items they prefer to balance the costs over the full menu. that's bullshit

nobody should have a problem with a restaurant increasing the price of wings because their costs have risen but you shouldn't be paying 5% more for a pizza because wings and burgers cost more

silly reasoning. you want to pay more for a pair of Nike's because the costs went up with Adidas?

I fully expect dining out will cost more in the near future when things reopen. Set aside the costs of the food. Just the lessened capacity and extra safety measures would drive the prices up. Personally I'll be more then happy to pay a little extra. I'll probably even tip more then normal. These places need to make money of they just wont exist and that would suck.

I actually prefer this than increasing the costs. This way when the threat is over the prices go back to normal. If there is a price increase to incorporate the costs, I expect to never the price revert back regardless of the situation.
